BELOW PAR RAIDERS LOSE TO WINDSOR YOUTH AT VICTORY FIELD
With 14 players available for the first time in a number of weeks Raiders played their first competitive match since 18th December this morning and in a hard-fought game lost by the odd goal in three.
The opening skirmishes were fairly even, but it was Raiders who had the first chance on 7 minutes when Finlay was put through one on one with the keeper who spread himself and got something on the shot to push the ball onto the post and out for a corner. From the corner Hari shoots over the bar and minutes later had a goal disallowed for offside. Raiders were now in the ascendancy and Harry wasted a good opportunity, heading over the bar from a Rufus cross. Windsor continued to look dangerous with the central striker popping up in space which Jack and Jamie found difficult to contain. It was from one of these attacks the Windsor striker found himself in acres of space 30 yards out and seeing Musty off his line, unleashed a venomous volley which looked destined to finish up in the back of the net. Somehow Musty rose and got his fingertips to the ball and tipped it onto the bar and it was scrambled away. Then on 19 mins Windsor scored when their nippy striker played a one two and slotted the ball home. The remainder of the half was end to end with Windsor pressing hard for a second and forcing several corners which Raiders successfully defended.
After the half time team talk Raiders came out determined to get back into the game but were too often let down by straying offside or poor quality of passes. Freddie had a goal disallowed for offside but on 52 mins Euan powered through the defence to blast a left foot shot into the net. Chances were coming, Rufus pulled a great effort just wide, Morgan the shot over while Jamie could perhaps have done better with a free header from a corner. Then on 69 mins disaster struck; from a Windsor breakaway the nippy striker was bearing down on goal and with Jack unable to get a tackle in, Jamie tried to get he ball from behind and brought the striker down, penalty awarded and coolly converted. In the remaining minutes Raiders had a couple more chances, Kyran curling a free kick just over and a Jack free kick hitting the wall and flying over the bar. The biggest chance came when a chip over the top had Euan racing onto the ball, the Windsor keeper came out of his area and clearly deliberately handled the ball. The referee judged it wasn’t a clear goal scoring opportunity and only booked him. To crown a disappointing day Hari was booked for kicking the ball away in frustration.
All in all a bad day at the ‘office’, the boys really need to get a grip on offside, both in attack and defence, the opposition linesman must have had a sore arm afterwards given the number of times he flagged for offside!
