RAIDERS OVERWHELM DOGGED AFC READING

Playing on the club’s 3G surface Raiders immediately took the game to Reading and inside the first minute had a shot saved from a cross by Rufus. This set the pattern for the remainder of the half with some last ditch defending keeping Raiders out. For their part Reading played some neat football in their half but were unable to release their strikers to get any meaningful shots on target, apart from one instance on 17 mins when Musty was called into action to make a good save with his feet. Shortly after that scare Raiders opened the scoring when James Barclay slammed home from close range. Raiders kept up the pressure and other chances came to Rufus, Euan and Hari and finally on 38 mins, after a good passing movement, Jamie made it 2-0 curling a great effort over the keeper. Finally just before the half time whistle Jimbo had a great shot blocked by the keeper’s legs.

The second half was very much like the first with Raiders dominating. Finlay had a couple of chances, the second one denied by a great save by the keeper. James Barclay had two headers one over the bar one from a corner and the other one cleared off the line. At the other end Musty saved well at the feet of the striker. When it seemed that a deserved third goal was never going to come Hari popped up to prod the ball home after 61 mins. Jimbo then contrived to blaze the ball over the bar when put through with just the keeper to beat and then got booked moments later, frustration at losing the ball getting the better of him and he swiped the opponent’s legs from beneath him! On 75 mins Raiders scored a fourth when Euan slotted home from a cross by Jamie and Reading missed a simple chance after some slack defending. Four minutes later Euan added a fifth after being put through. There just remained time for Reading to score a consolation goal when their big striker finally got the better of Raiders central defenders and slotted home between Musty’s legs.

A dominating performance by the boys on a hot Spring day. Hopefully they learnt on days like this to let the ball do the work and keep the passing simple!
