A clean sheet 🙂

Another good competitive game under the lights on a Friday night. Wandsworth deserve full credit both for their performance and for their sportsmanship. Good club, good lads.

Ascot dominated possession for about 60 minutes of the game but Wandsworth ran the other 30, 15 minutes either side of half time. Ascot took the lead when Ben ran wide and crossed into the box, a lovely set by Tim and Doug dug out a first time shot that went under the keeper 1-0 after 14 minutes. Another good move this time with Sam breaking wide and finding Simmo inside, his volley just went wide of the far post. After 20 minutes Doug won the ball high and played in Ben down the centre, touch and finish in the corner 2-0.

It was a dominant beginning for Ascot but Wandsworth responded really well. They started to wrestle possession from Ascot and put a lot of pressure on the ball forcing Ascot into poor decisions and misplaced passes. Wandsworth now had the upper hand in terms of possession but they were finding it hard to convert that possession into good chance. HT 2-0

Wandsworth started the second half in the same vein and the Ascot second goal seemed a long time ago. Ascot had the chance to kill the game off when a wonderful 1-2 between Ben and Tim left Tim one on one with the keeper. Shot was blocked by keepers legs and you wondered if that was going to be a pivotal moment. As it turned out, it wasn’t and Ascot started to get hold of the ball a little more. Wandsworth were still playing well but still found it hard to create any really good chances.

Sam brought Ascot back into the game. His running in behind and shutting down the Wandsworth defence was a spirit for others to copy. He took the ball wide right, cut inside two defenders and a curling shot was heading for the top corner when it was deflected over the bar for a corner. On 65 minutes it is possible to say that Ascot had two reasonable chances to get that important third goal. In the same move, Sam hit the post and Lunny hit the bar, Simmo nodded it in but was given offside. How kind was that description 

Then the goal did come. 65 minutes and Rich looked for Lunny, a flick on to Sam and a calm finish 3-0. Five minutes later and a great inswinging corner delivered by Simmo was headed into the net by JK and the game was done.

Great to see Lunny back in the Ascot dressing room and making his debut for the Vets tonight. Also great to see Matt Newall get a full 90 minutes – well done mate.
