An excellent collective effort
A windy day and maybe the greenkeeper could’ve taken a few inches off the grass but both teams had to adapt. The game started with Simmo and Gleavy combining instinctively to their their winger waltz through but it got a lot better after this.
The first goal for Ascot was a passing move down the right between Simmo and Toby, who got the ball wide to Doug, who’s dangerous ball bounced through the Ram’s defence and ended up at Turbo’s feet one on one. A cool finish. 0-1 on 21 minutes.
A loose ball down the Ram’s right. Toby won the 50/50 on the half way line, he drove forward then switched play to Ben on the far right hand side of the box, who set Doug with a cushioned volley and Doug drilled home low to the keepers left. Great goal and 0-2 on 35 minutes. Ascot then withstood a few half chances and free kicks before half time, but really should have been four or five up by that point. Rich saved well from one freekick and JK put his body on the line to block another effort.
Sam was getting in behind regularly, and was a real handful for the Ram’s defence. HT 0-2 and maybe could’ve been more.
Outstanding performances in the middle of the park from Rob, Andy and Doug in the first half, complimented by Tim and Phil who came on in the second half to maintain dominance, against a Rams midfield containing Jody Morris and Robert Wollaston was one of the highlights of the match. Each Ascot player having the confidence to get the ball down and play on the farmer’s field of a pitch, as well as closing down the two high quality veterans at every opportunity. Sam made it 3-0 with a wonderful headed goal from Rob’s corner. A carbon copy of the goal against Hersham in our last game. Let’s keep making that run.
Sam’s commitment up front to chasing balls down not only took pressure off the lads behind him but also earned him a hattrick which should’ve been four. The disallowed goal was criminal as he bent it superbly into the top left corner.
West London Rams got the game back to 3-1 with 30 minutes left but Ascot continued to create and take chances. Sam, Ben, Rob and Tim completed the scoring for Ascot and took them to the top of the table.
It was a great collective effort by the whole team showing tenacity and tackling in order to impose themselves on the game throughout.
